Background:
Recognizing the imperative for a better approach to address vaping incidents, I propose the implementation of a comprehensive Nicotine Education and Rehabilitation Program. I designed this program to offer a constructive alternative to expulsion, prioritizing education, support, and rehabilitation for students caught using nicotine products. Utilizing the INDEPTH program from the American Lung Association, this program will use a combination of existing proven-to-work programs while maintaining some existing school rules.
Proposal: Nicotine Education and Rehabilitation Program
Educational Workshop
- Develop a dynamic and engaging educational workshop focused on elucidating the risks and consequences of nicotine addiction, including school policy.
Counseling and Support Services
- Establish mandatory confidential counseling tailored for students caught vaping, providing a secure space for open discussion to explore the underlying reasons for their behavior.
- Offer a comprehensive set of resources and support mechanisms to guide students through overcoming nicotine addiction, and make sure students understand that safe harbor is at any time, not only at the beginning of the year.
Individualized Action Plans
- Collaborate closely with each affected student to formulate a personalized action plan addressing their unique needs and challenges.
- Establish achievable goals and milestones to monitor progress, fostering positive behavior changes.
